Unique Minds 5: Design Process

jelno week 5 artwork

This week I'm going to talk about the design process behind jelno and a bit about how the logo came to be.

Some people seem to think to design something you need to be 100% original and can't take inspiration from other people but this couldn't be further from the truth. I have a whole separate Instagram account where I follow brands, designers, artists just for inspiration. If I see stuff I like I will take inspiration and incorporate elements in future designs.

What often happens is that I have an idea for a design and quickly sketch it down on an app on my phone just so I don't lose the thought, then the next day (if I think the designs good enough) I'll sketch it in a notebook and create variations of the design and look at similar designs to get an idea of what I want the design to really look like on a piece of clothing. Once I'm happy with one of the variations of the design I'll recreate it in an illustrator and post it on the Instagram story to see what people think. Instagram is so helpful because I can get feedback on designs instantly so if people don't seem to like it I can easily edit the design and try again. At the moment not every design can become a reality but I'm hoping many of the designs will feature on clothing in the future.

I came up with a name and logo for the brand on a single 30-minute bus journey right after I came up with the idea for the brand. The whole thing felt like a eureka moment but now I look back none of it really made any sense. I mean the idea made sense but the name just popped into my head, I liked the way it sounded and looked up - it had no trademark, perfect, the only things that shared the same name was a small village in Sweden and an obscure kpop band - no biggy, and ever since then the name has stuck. The original logo stemmed from the name- which I split up into 'jell-O' + 'no' and so the original logo was a jelly with an eye with a slight expression of saying no ( image down below ). I was really never happy with this so I kept experimenting and eventually ended up with the current logo I have now - I would say it went through about 50 iterations before I was really happy with it.

Honestly, I don't hate the design but it wasn't fitting what I envisioned the brand to be so it had to go. Bye jelly logo, you won't be missed.

See you next week with another blog, if you have any interest at all in JELNO try and spread the word as much as possible it's a massive help <3
