Unique Minds 2: Company Update

jelno week 2 artwork

Hi, I'm back again for week two of the JELNO blog, I'm going to be updating the blog with a main post every Sunday now (I'm aiming for Sunday morning most weeks so check back then for the next entry.)

I've been thinking of ideas to make the blog a bit more interesting and one of these ideas is that each main blog post will be accompanied by a mini poster, hopefully making the posts a bit more interesting along with improving my graphic design skills. You can see the first two posters right now and there'll be a new one every Sunday so stay tuned. Also, let me know if you have an idea for one of these posters I'll be sure to make it for an upcoming blog.

This week I decided on the tee I want for JELNOs first tee release, it's the 'death of TV' design (see below) the only problem with this design is that it will have two main colours- meaning I will need to do two screen prints for the design. And I've never screen printed before :/ Hopefully youtube tutorials will be enough to teach me but if not I'll have to shell out for a screen printing course.

When I first came up with the idea of JELNO I never really appreciate how much work was involved, and how many different elements that you have to work on simultaneously in order to make progress. I mean I always knew there would be a lot of work, but there are areas that seem relatively simple, like getting stickers made for example, but then you do research into stickers and find thousands of companies, with each company having 10-20 types choose from, with each different sticker type having pros and cons and a different minimum order number. So a task that you thought would take an hour or two proceeds to take up the whole week.

But getting these tasks done can be so satisfying as it leads you one step closer to where and what you want your brand to be, and even if the task leads to a dead-end the knowledge you have learned will always be helpful at some point and so every task seems helpful in some way.

Once I get the t-shirt first few t-shirts done I'm hoping to then do some sweatshirts and hoodies for the winter before looking on to 2020. 2020 will be the year I really start experimenting with designs and I'm hoping to do a few cut and sew Hawaiian shirts by next summer, along with bucket hats and skateboard decks, of course, all of this might not happen as I will be studying at the same time so my time may be quite thin, but that's what I'm aiming for (also hoping for a collab of some sort late 2019, early 2020)

I was thinking of getting a small embroidery machine in the future as I want to do some limited run personalized garments which include detailed embroidered designs all over. If I did this it would likely be 2020 some time as I just don't have the funds for it at the moment.

Jelno concept for some cargo pants

(above is a very, very rough concept for some limited cargo pants, triangles would be embroidered)

Anyway, I'm gonna close week 2 of the blog now, next entry I'm thinking of talking more about the idea behind the brand, how I came up with the logo and the brand identity that I want to form.

See you next week with another blog, if you have any interest at all in JELNO try and spread the word as much as possible it's a massive help <3
